Sri Lankan shot dead in Oakland, USA

A 32-year-old Sri Lankan has been shot dead in Oakland, USA on Tuesday (August 20) night. The deceased who has been identified as Janath Liyanage was shot about 11:13 p.m. on Tuesday in the 600 block of 20th Street between Rashida Muhammad Street and San Pablo Avenue.

Police said he died at a hospital at 1:01 a.m. Wednesday.

US authorities said Liyanage was standing outside his vehicle when he was confronted by someone who shot him and took off before the police arrived.

Speaking to News 1st, relatives of the deceased living in Sri Lanka said Janath Liyanage has been living in the US for the past 10 years and also holds a US citizenship and had served as an Uber driver. They added that when inquired, the Oakland Police refused to reveal any information due to the ongoing investigation.
