Here is a snapshot of our performing groups:
The Global Celebrations began with a special tribute to our sponsors, whose invaluable partnership was instrumental in the event’s success. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Techno Dad, Sunland Group of Companies, J Med Supply Inc., Anon Catering, Uniformity, Holy Family Alumni Association of California, and Antonette Duval from Wells Fargo for their generous support. Their contributions were crucial in making this event a resounding success.
Achala Weerasinghe, the Director of Cultural Affairs of the Sri Lanka Foundation and Director of Operations of the Academy of Performing Arts, conducted the official ceremony. It honored Dr. Walter Jayasinghe, the Chairman of the board of the Sri Lanka Foundation, a leading expatriate physician who came to the U.S. in the early 1960s. In 2003, he established the Foundation with a vision to promote Sri Lankan cultural activities in the USA.
Dr. Walter Jayasinghe graced the occasion with a speech highlighting the event’s benefits and identifying the opportunities for a global presence of performers and audience. The President and CEO of SLF, Dr. Dishan Jayasinha, touched on the event’s history and welcomed all to the event. The Virtual Celebrations were also graced with messages from the Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, and the Ambassador for Sri Lanka to the USA, Mrs. Julie Chung.
The event celebrations continued with Sajee Perera, the Master of Ceremonies, introducing the Sri Lanka Foundation Academy of Performing Arts. The Academy showcased a spectacular opening performance to the SLF theme song, followed by mesmerizing dance, drums, and music performances from Chile, France, Sri Lanka, Romania, Australia, and the USA, truly reflecting the global nature of the event.
The performances were interspersed by a glamorous cultural fashion show with Sri Lankan models showcasing Sri Lankan vibrant, colorful Batik Fashions from Shanika Batiks, Sri Lanka, choreographed by Achala Weerasinghe.
This year’s Sri Lanka Day celebrations received much positive feedback from the global audience. The event exceeded the standards set by long-established ethnic events anywhere. It was a matter of pride to every Sri Lankan that their compatriots could stand side by side with other nations wherever they may be.
