February 4th marked the 76th anniversary of Sri Lanka gaining independence from colonial rule. Sri Lankan National Day, also referred to as Independence Day, is a significant Sri Lankan holiday observed annually. It celebrates the nation’s liberation from British colonial rule in 1948. This commemoration is widely celebrated nationwide with various festivities, including flag-hoisting ceremonies, vibrant dances, captivating parades, and cultural performances, symbolizing the spirit of unity and national pride.
The Southern California celebration of Sri Lanka’s 76th National Independence Day occurred on February 3rd, 2024. The Independence Day anniversary was celebrated by the Counsel General Office of Sri Lanka in Los Angeles with the Sri Lanka America Association of Southern California, bringing together Sri Lankan expatriates and friends of Sri Lanka in the area.
The traditional hoisting of the National flag and singing of the anthems of Sri Lanka and the United States set the tone for the occasion. The traditions continued as officials lit the oil lamp, symbolizing unity and prosperity.
Amidst the festivities, heartfelt speeches were delivered, emphasizing the enduring values of freedom, democracy, and unity, which continue to guide Sri Lanka on its journey toward progress and prosperity. The celebration featured a captivating cultural show, with contributions from diverse dance academies. The event showcased the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka through traditional performances, fostering a sense of community and belonging among attendees. Dancers from each academy presented vibrant performances, infusing the celebration with energy and cultural richness.
The Sri Lanka Foundation supported and attended the celebration and those in attendance included Dr. Walter Jayasinghe, Chairman and Founder of the Sri Lanka Foundation, Aeshea Jayasinghe, and Achala Weerasinghe, the Director of the Academy of Performing Arts. The Sri Lanka Foundation Academy of Performing Arts students showcased a spectacular traditional dance performance, further enriching the event with their talent and artistry.
The 76th Independence Day celebration spectacularly displayed national pride, unity, and resilience, symbolizing a collective commitment to building a new and prosperous future.
