“Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s”, is the theme for 2022, promoted by the Dementia community around the globe. Conversations on this theme will challenge stigma, provide information and lead to action and support for persons with dementia and their caregivers.
The Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation (LAF) which leads the campaign on behalf of persons and carers affected by dementia will launch its first awareness event for this year on February 26 (the last Saturday in February) with the annual Scrabble Bash.
The tournament is being held after a lapse of one year due to COVID.
Scrabble is one of the many games promoted to stimulate brain activity. It also reduces loneliness and depression which are some of the risk factors for dementia. It is an ideal game to get the brain cells ticking as it requires players to constantly come up with new words to get high scores. Studies have suggested that decades of playing intensive Scrabble has had positive effects on cognitive abilities.
The tournament will be organised by Shaila Amalean, a former National Player, and her team. The tournament this year is for all adults who have been fully vaccinated. Those who have participated over the years will endorse that a fun day is guaranteed for all.
