A rare cormorant species was spotted in Girithale, Polonnaruwa on December 26th. Correspondents in the area stated that around 5000 rare cormorants were spotted. Locals said the cormorants migrate to the area due to the change in the weather and they are mostly seen when water levels of the Girithale Tank rises.
