Meet Rising Star Award winner Tanya Egodage, MD, FACS
We are awarding Tanya Egodage, MD, FACS, because of her essential medical work and determination to share her knowledge and gifts with students in the U.S. and Sri Lanka. In the fast-paced world of critical care, Dr. Egodage is a rising star!
Tanya Egodage, MD, FACS, grew up in Seal Beach, California. After graduating from the University of California Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, she attended medical school at the American University of the Caribbean, Coral Gables, FL. In a highly competitive profession, Dr. Egodage is making a name for herself.
Dr. Egodage is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, Camden, NJ. Previously, she was an attending surgeon in Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care at Cooper University Hospital in Chicago, IL. Trauma surgeons specialize in emergency surgeries on people who’ve had a critical injury or illness and are subspecialist surgeons in the field of acute care surgery. She believes that passing on knowledge isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s vital to the profession.
Dr. Egodage is triple board certified in general surgery, surgical critical care, and neurocritical care. With three specialty certifications, membership in six professional organizations, and numerous awards, including one from the Defense Department for breast cancer research, Dr. Egodage combines academic research and the practice of critical care surgery in her career. Through her efforts, she received a $91,000 grant to investigate the epigenetics of frailty to study how changes to DNA affect how patients perform after an injury.
In addition to her work, Dr. Egodage feels passionate about teaching other physicians and giving back to Sri Lanka. She had the opportunity to work with local Sri Lankan physicians and perform bleeding control courses (Stop the Bleed). She looks forward to helping the local surgeons in Sri Lanka to further their excellent work. She channels her passion for teaching as an Associate Program Director for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, which chooses and trains surgeons to specialize in trauma surgery and critical care of surgical patients, as she loves working with residents and medical students.
Currently, Dr. Egodage holds the title of Medical Director of Cooper’s Violence Intervention Program, which has received both State and Federal funds to implement and expand hospital-based anti-violence programs. Cooper is one of 11 hospitals to split $10 million from the American Rescue Plan for violence intervention. The program started in 2020 with a $500,000 federal grant. Dr. Egodage is doing the vital work of helping people heal from both the physical and emotional effects of trauma with medical intervention and going even further with help to get their lives back on track.
