Dananjaya Edirisinghe, a self-taught metal sculpture artist from Colombo, Sri Lanka, has accepted his application at the “Artexpo New York 2023” as an exhibitor to showcase his one-of-a-kind unique metal sculptures. It is a long-running fair that qualifies itself as the world’s largest fine art trade show. It gathers hundreds of leading galleries, exciting artists, international collectors, and art lovers. Participation in this prominent event is highly beneficial to his artistic journey and will mark a significant moment in his artistic career. It also creates an enormous opportunity to help emerging artists of Sri Lanka.
Art has always been his spirit and passion; he continuously experiments each day, pushing himself to creative limits. He was raised with metal bashing sounds as a part of his childhood, but his professional relationship with sculptures only boomed during the past five years. During his journey as a visual artist, he has participated in many Local and international exhibitions.
When he started his professional career as an artist, he used to take short road trips, surf the internet, and make conversations with his co-artists. As a child, he had spent so much time imagining fantasy and conceptual things, and he started to develop his skill and focus on his sculpting process. He believes as an artist, when he focuses on what he does, everything that happens to him, appears to him or that he hears a source of inspiration.
He started creating his work using scrap metal, but he quickly evolved to stainless steel, brass, and copper as it could be preserved and amplified with natural corrosion. Once he picks the needed materials, he separates them into irregular pieces and forms them into an imagined art piece. Sometimes he draws a simple sketch for complicated works, but most of the time, he likes to do his creation without sketches. The outcome always surprises him when he starts the work with an empty mind, without any sketch.
Dhanajaya presented his metal sculptures for the first time in 2018 at the “Kalapola,” the biggest open-air art fair in Sri Lanka. His greatest accomplishment in this journey so far is representing Sri Lanka in the “World youth forum-Egypt” as a sculpture artist and receiving world recognition.
