The death toll in Sri Lanka from flooding and landslides caused by torrential monsoons last week has risen to 203 as of Wednesday, with 96 others missing, local media reported.
The Disaster Management Center said about 630,000 people have been affected, with some 1,500 homes and other buildings completely destroyed by two days of heavy rainfall that severely hit the island’s southern and western regions from Thursday and caused the worst flood damage since 2003.
Japan said Wednesday it will dispatch a disaster relief team to Sri Lanka, as well as provide tents and other emergency relief supplies through the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
