A heartfelt celebration of the life of Roma Tira De Zoysa took place on July 20th at the Walter Jay Building Auditorium on Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles. Roma, who passed away on June 20th, 2024, at the age of 89, is deeply missed by all who knew her.

The event was hosted by her daughter, Sonali Tucker, and organized by Achala Weerasinghe along with the Bishops College Past Pupil Association in the USA (BCPPA USA). Friends, family, and community members gathered to honor Roma’s remarkable life and the profound impact she had on everyone around her.

Dr. Nandasiri Jasentuliyana, a close friend of Roma’s since the late 1950s, spoke movingly at the celebration. He described her as a paragon of elegance and accomplishment, whose presence graced our lives in ways that will forever be cherished.

Roma’s life was a beautiful testament to the rich tapestry of Sri Lankan culture and the indomitable spirit of its people. While her lineage; her father, Stanley De Zoysa, was a distinguished Finance Minister who played a crucial role in shaping Sri Lanka’s economic landscape was significant, it was her warmth, kindness, and dedication to her community that truly defined her legacy.

In her commitment to fostering cultural connections, Roma dedicated many years to the Sri Lanka Foundation International in Los Angeles, actively participating in community gatherings and events. From 2006 to 2008, she co-produced the Sri Lanka Foundation Beauty Pageant alongside Shirani Stanislouse, the Chief Operating Officer of the Foundation. This initiative showcased not only beauty but also the richness of Sri Lankan heritage, further enriching the community she loved.

The celebration concluded with heartfelt musical tributes performed by Sondra Kumaraperu and Ingrid Mellican, followed by a delightful buffet lunch where attendees shared stories and memories of Roma.

May her soul attain Nibbana, and may her spirit continue to inspire us all. You will always be remembered in our hearts, Roma!
