Dharma Vijaya Buddhist Vihara in Los Angeles, California will host a special virtual chanting ceremony on Sunday, December 27. 108 Sri Lankan monks across the USA will take turns chanting the Ratana Sutta to bless devotees in this most difficult time. For the last few months, the participating temples have been chanting the Ratana Sutta twice each day during the morning and evening.

Ratana Sutta is a special Buddhist Sutta which has been created to overcome challenges caused by the pandemics. The “Ratana Sutta,” or the “Jewel Discourse,” describes the exact qualities of the Buddha, the Dhamma (his teachings), and the Sangha (enlightened disciples). This sutta was taught by the Buddha as a way to help alleviate a plague afflicting the city of Vesali. The Buddha had Ven. Ananda walk through and around the city chanting this sutta, which led to the dispersal of the plague and the city returning to prosperity. Therefore, Ratana Sutta is still chanted for its protective powers.

The monks at Dharma Vijaya Buddhist Vihara also chanted the Ratana Sutta 108 times in March 2020 to send positive healing energy at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S.

Sunday December 27, 2020, all-day; 5.00 am to 8.00 pm (Pacific Time)
