The San Gabriel Mission Play House was full of proud Sri Lankan Americans dresses in beautiful osaris, saris, suites and national dress gathered together to celebrate the 67th Independence day of Sri Lanka. After the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, second generation Sri Lankan Americans mesmerized the crowd with traditional dancing and cultural items. The beautiful costumes were ornate and colorful showcasing the various cultures in Sri Lanka.
This successful event was organized by the Serendib Foundation under the guidance of the Consulate General’s Office in Los Angeles. Even with many last minute changes the Serendib production team, choreographers and performers made the event a specular evening.
The evening highlighted the importance of celebrating Independence Day and reminded us the history of gaining our freedom and the importance of remembering leaders, soldiers and citizens of the country who had shed their blood and lives to gain us freedom.
