Lecture on South and Southeast Asian Art

May 3, 2015 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm PDT

Osmund Bopearachchi, Director of Research at the French National Center for Scientific Research (C.N.R.S), discusses “Sri Lanka: A Land of Multicultural Exchanges.” Dr. Bopearachchi presents the spectacular but little-known art from the island nation of Sri Lanka. He places the Buddhist and Hindu sculpture, paintings, and architecture in their relationship to the art of South and Southeast Asia, identifying Sri Lanka as a hub of trade and culture across Asia. In addition to being the Director of Research at the French National Center for Scientific Research (C.N.R.S), Osmund Bopearachchi teaches Central Asian and South-Asian archaeology and art history at the Paris IV-Sorbonne University. Currently he is a visiting scholar in Central Asian Art and Archaeology at the University of California, Berkeley. He has published nine books, edited six books and published 130 articles in international journals.
