Twenty five percent of all the elected representatives of the local government institutions would be comprised of women, under whatever system the polls is held, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe assured in Parliament today.
He said that the motion related to this move would be presented in Parliament in January next year. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe made these observations after informing the House that the Gazetted notification for the amendment with regard to the 25 percent women representation was to be issued later in the day. He said the change will bring in laws to make the political parties to nominate 25 percent women candidates for a local body.
He made this observation when opposition members including Chief Opposition Whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake and MP Dinesh Gunawardena inquired if the women representation is to be increased to 25 as a proportion of the nominees or the members elected.
