Young trumpet player Rovinya Ruhunuge was born in Sri Lanka. She  attended Visaka Vidyalaya until grade 3 and moved to California. She currently lives in Irvine, California.

Rovinya always had a passion for music. When asked about her choice of instrument she said that she picked the Trumpet because it had only 3 keys. She laughed as she said that she soon realized that it was no easy task to play the Trumpet. She was determined to learn to play and her passion gave her the courage to overcome challengers. She practiced day and night and reached out to her teachers for help.

Rovinya soon felt confident in participating in school auditions and got selected to play for the Irvine Unified School District Honor Orchestra. She took off like a storm from there and performed at Disneyland, Segerstrom Performing Arts Center in Orange County, Sri Lanka Day and Sri Lanka Foundation’s Award Ceremony in 2014. She even had to learn how to play the Sri Lankan National Anthem to perform at the Foundation Awards Ceremony.

When asked who inspires her, Rovinya said it is her parents Rishan & Roshika “Ammi & Thaththi support me day and night and my teachers Ms Przytulski, Ms DeCarlo and Mr Grenier helped me to build my skills.”

When asked what her ultimate goal is she smiled and said ” I want to be able to play the trumpet like Dr Jesse McGuire, the award winning trumpet player.”  We wish this little rising star all the very best.
