On August 6, 2024, the Sri Lanka Foundation Academy of Performing Arts (SLF APA) conducted an inspiring workshop for students at the Los Angeles Performing Arts Conservatory (LAPAC) on Pico Boulevard. Led by the talented instructors Nirosha Wijegunasekare and Akila Palipana, with guidance from SLF APA Director Achala Weerasinghe, this engaging session celebrated Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage by introducing participants to traditional dance forms that have been preserved through generations, each showcasing its unique movement styles.
The workshop immersed attendees in a variety of dance forms rooted in ancient rituals, emphasizing their narrative power through rhythm, reverence, and resilience. Each movement created a vibrant and graceful symphony that captured the essence of Sri Lankan culture.
A highlight of the workshop was the Kandyan Dance, closely linked to the Kohomba Kankariya, a majestic celebration that invokes divine blessings from Kandy. Participants also explored the lively Low Country Dance, associated with the Dewolmaduwa ceremony aimed at exorcising malevolent spirits. Characterized by energetic footwork, colorful costumes, and resonant drumbeats, this dance serves to invoke blessings and ward off negativity. Additionally, the serene Sabaragamuwa Dance enriched the experience, illustrating the profound connection between the people and their spiritual beliefs.
The workshop aimed to enhance the versatility and expressiveness of film school students as performers. Through a structured program, participants engaged in warm-up exercises, fundamental dance elements, and techniques that integrated movement with character development. They learned about the significance of Wannama, including Ukusa Wannama and Gajaga Wannama—dances within the Kandyan tradition inspired by nature, animals, and mythology. Participants practiced movements conveying emotions such as love, anger, fear, and power, fostering a deep connection between dance and emotional expression.
The workshop culminated in a creative group project, allowing students of the LAPAC to showcase their learning by creating short performances based on the techniques and styles they had explored. This collaborative exercise not only highlighted their newly acquired skills but also encouraged teamwork and innovative thinking.
The workshop at LAPAC Film School was a resounding success, offering participants a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Sri Lankan dance. The SLF APA has inspired new artists to explore and express their creativity through movement. This event transcended a traditional workshop; it was a vibrant exchange of culture, artistry, and the transformative power of dance in storytelling and emotional expression.
